Anthony A. Hyman has been named as EMBL’s next Director General. He will take over EMBL’s leadership from Interim Director General Peer Bork and Interim Executive Director Ewan Birney – both have been leading the institution since former Director General Edith Heard departed EMBL earlier in 2025.
Prof. Harald Schwalbe, Instruct-ERIC Director, commented: “Instruct-ERIC congratulates Tony on this prestigious position and look forward to continue to support EMBL, a prime centre in Instruct, in its evolution. As the distributed European infrastructure in integrated structural biology, we are looking forward to shaping science in the times of impressive changes.”
Hyman will begin as Director General on 31 March 2026. He is one of four founding directors of the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics in Dresden, Germany, and is currently a group leader at the institute.
Hyman’s research focuses on biological condensates and phase separation in health and disease.
EMBL joined as a Member in 2019, and as a Centre providing funded access through Instruct in 2021. Users can apply to utilise advanced structural biology technologies at EMBL Heidelberg, EMBL Hamburg, and EMBL Grenoble.
